About Crop & Remove Background

Useful details for choosing formats, browser settings, and privacy-safe local processing.

What Crop & Remove Background does

Crop & Remove Background finds the main subject in a photo and turns everything else transparent, producing a cutout you can drop into any design.

The segmentation model runs locally in your browser through WebAssembly, so the photo is never uploaded and the result stays private on your device.

  • Best for: Amazon and Etsy main images, Shopify square thumbnails, Instagram and TikTok posts, YouTube thumbnails
  • Input: JPG, PNG, WebP, and browser-supported images
  • Output: transparent PNG or WebP

Settings and output control

Choose the background treatment — transparent, white, or a custom color — and the export format for the queue.

The edge control tightens the alpha matte when a cutout looks soft. Smooth gradients are kept for hair and fur; a firmer setting cleans up hard-edged products.

  • Files stay on this device by default
  • Batch export is available after processing
  • Model runs on this device after a one-time download

Browser support and practical limits

Background removal uses a small ONNX segmentation model executed by onnxruntime-web with WebAssembly, so the browser does the work instead of a server.

The first run downloads the model and the inference runtime once. After that they are cached, and processing stays on this device. Desktop browsers handle batches best because mobile browsers have less memory.

  • Desktop batch: up to 50 images
  • Max image size: 8192 x 4096 px each
  • Mobile: smaller batches recommended

FAQ

Common questions

How is the automatic crop decided?

The tool runs a quick subject-detection pass, finds the bounding box of the subject, then frames the crop around that box using the aspect ratio and the padding you choose. The subject ends up centered instead of the photo being blindly center-cropped.

What does the padding slider change?

It sets how much of the frame the subject fills. 85% is a good starting point for marketplace images; 95% is a tight crop, while 60% leaves more breathing room.

Can I crop manually instead?

Yes. Switch to Free crop and drag the box on the preview, or resize it with the handles. The background is then removed only inside that box, which keeps the cutout edges sharp.

Why is the background removed after cropping?

The segmentation model works at a fixed input size. Cropping first means the subject fills that input, so edges stay sharp. Doing it the other way around would sample a small part of a low-resolution matte and blur the outline.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The model is downloaded once and runs inside your browser, and every crop and cutout happens on your device. Image data never leaves it.

What are the output filenames?

Each result keeps its original filename with the extension matching the chosen format, for example product-01.jpg becomes product-01.png. Download single files or the whole batch as a ZIP.
