About High Quality Background Remover

Useful details for choosing formats, browser settings, and privacy-safe local processing.

What High Quality Background Remover does

High Quality Background Remover finds the main subject in a photo and turns everything else transparent, producing a cutout you can drop into any design.

The segmentation model runs locally in your browser through WebAssembly, so the photo is never uploaded and the result stays private on your device.

  • Best for: Portraits with flyaway hair, Pets and fur, Detailed product shots, Print-ready cutouts
  • Input: JPG, PNG, WebP, and browser-supported images
  • Output: transparent PNG or WebP

Settings and output control

Choose the background treatment — transparent, white, or a custom color — and the export format for the queue.

The edge control tightens the alpha matte when a cutout looks soft. Smooth gradients are kept for hair and fur; a firmer setting cleans up hard-edged products.

  • Files stay on this device by default
  • Batch export is available after processing
  • Model runs on this device after a one-time download

Browser support and practical limits

Background removal uses a small ONNX segmentation model executed by onnxruntime-web with WebAssembly, so the browser does the work instead of a server.

The first run downloads the model and the inference runtime once. After that they are cached, and processing stays on this device. Desktop browsers handle batches best because mobile browsers have less memory.

  • Desktop batch: up to 50 images
  • Max image size: 8192 x 4096 px each
  • Mobile: smaller batches recommended
How it works

Use High Quality Background Remover in four steps

Choose files from your device. The tool keeps the workflow inside your browser.

2

Download the quality model once

Use the preset settings or adjust format, quality, and target size.

3

Remove background on your GPU

Run the browser processing queue and review each file result as it finishes.

4

Download transparent PNGs

Download individual files or a ZIP archive when the batch is complete.

FAQ

Common questions

How is this different from the fast background remover?

Both run entirely on your device. The fast tool uses a 4.4 MB U2-NetP model that loads in seconds, while this page uses BiRefNet-lite, which resolves finer detail such as hair, fur, and thin straps. The trade-off is a much larger one-time download.

Why does this page need WebGPU?

BiRefNet-lite segments at 512 x 512 pixels with a much larger network than the fast model. WebGPU runs it on your graphics card; a cutout takes roughly 15 to 25 seconds on integrated graphics and a few seconds on a discrete GPU. Chrome, Edge, and recent Safari and Firefox versions include WebGPU. If your browser does not expose WebGPU, use the fast background remover.

How big is the download and is it really one time?

The BiRefNet-lite model is about 94 MB and the WebGPU runtime adds roughly 27 MB. Both are stored in your browser cache after the first run, so repeat visits start immediately without re-downloading.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The model file is downloaded from this site, but the image pixels are processed inside your browser and never uploaded. There is no API key and no per-image cost.

Can I still use this without WebGPU?

The page tells you when WebGPU is unavailable and links you to the fast background remover, which runs on WebAssembly in any modern browser. The large model can fall back to CPU, but it is slow enough that the fast tool is the better choice.

Does it work on batches?

Yes. Add a batch and the queue processes images one at a time on your GPU, then downloads individually or as a ZIP archive.
