About Remove Image Background

Useful details for choosing formats, browser settings, and privacy-safe local processing.

What Remove Image Background does

Remove Image Background finds the main subject in a photo and turns everything else transparent, producing a cutout you can drop into any design.

The segmentation model runs locally in your browser through WebAssembly, so the photo is never uploaded and the result stays private on your device.

  • Best for: E-commerce product photos, Profile pictures, Design mockups, Presentation slides
  • Input: JPG, PNG, WebP, and browser-supported images
  • Output: transparent PNG or WebP

Settings and output control

Choose the background treatment — transparent, white, or a custom color — and the export format for the queue.

The edge control tightens the alpha matte when a cutout looks soft. Smooth gradients are kept for hair and fur; a firmer setting cleans up hard-edged products.

  • Files stay on this device by default
  • Batch export is available after processing
  • Model runs on this device after a one-time download

Browser support and practical limits

Background removal uses a small ONNX segmentation model executed by onnxruntime-web with WebAssembly, so the browser does the work instead of a server.

The first run downloads the model and the inference runtime once. After that they are cached, and processing stays on this device. Desktop browsers handle batches best because mobile browsers have less memory.

  • Desktop batch: up to 50 images
  • Max image size: 8192 x 4096 px each
  • Mobile: smaller batches recommended

FAQ

Common questions

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The segmentation model runs inside your browser with WebAssembly, so image pixels never leave your device. Only the model file itself is downloaded, once, from this site.

Why does the first image take longer?

The first run downloads the lightweight U2-NetP model (about 4.4 MB) plus the browser inference runtime. Both are cached, so later images and repeat visits start immediately.

Which output format should I choose?

PNG keeps transparency and is the right choice for cutouts. Choose WebP for smaller transparent files, or switch to a solid background if you need JPG.

How good are the edges?

This page uses the lightweight model, which is fast and reliable for people, products, and clear subjects. Fine hair and fur stay softer — raise the edge control for a firmer outline.

Can I process several images at once?

Yes. Add a batch, run the queue, and download single files or a ZIP archive. Everything is processed one image at a time on your device.

Does this work offline?

After the model and runtime are cached by your browser, the tool keeps working without a network connection on most browsers.
